Danny the Demon races into the underground. Beat up old guitar strung across his back, he takes four lightning strides past the ancient wrinkled newspaper seller with the bulbous purple nose and reaches the top of the old wooden escalator. He grabs at a handrail and leaps three at a time down the rickety moving steps. His grubby blond hair flies behind him like a horse’s mane. Matted and greasy, it hasn’t been washed for months. Neither has his body. Neither has his jeans, t-shirt or plimsolls. Danny is a scumbag busker and he’s late for his pitch.

This is a fast-paced and hilariously entertaining comedy. Down in the London underground cavorting with the buskers that you’ve always seen and then wondered what they got up to after you had walked past them…

The London Underground of the 1980s is not familiar turf for me. I would be more at home with the Rap underground. However, the writer did transport me there and made the underground real to me. My thoughts brought back memories of of scenes from "Blade Runner."

All in all it was a good read and I highly recommend it to others even Seniors like me..

Half Alive edition by John Dempsey David Harrison Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Semi-amusing narrative about a group of fictional (?) London buskers in the mid-80s who live, love and play together with varying degrees of success in each area. It illuminates a particular kind of live-for-the-moment lifestyle which still survives to an extent today in the busking community, at least in London where I experienced it first hand being a licensed Tube busker from 2003-7. Some of the characters are well-drawn in a literary sense, but definitely not in the literal (artistic) sense - the drawings are poor and just should have been left out. They detract from the artistic whole. Not a complete waste of time if you have an interest in any of alternative life-styles, busking or musicians as characters.
knowing both the author and the london he writes of, i found myself continually amused and entertained in this book, isnt that what it was supposed to do so in that case 10 out of 10 Jack, i look forward to reading your next efforts! hopefullly also on kindle
A movie in words and a rare view of the life of the busking musician from behind the guitar. The author also has a great ear for everyday London conversation. A recommended read!
A rollercoaster ride through the subways of London with a group of crazy well-drawn characters out to have a good time and make a living, albeit precarious, by busking. A thoroughly enjoyable read, made all the more convincing as the author lived the life and now 'talks the talk' though the pages of this novel. Highly recommended.
An often hilarious sometimes a bit wistful novel about the 80ies music playing alternative scene in the tubes. The well-known saying about the 60ies about remebering them means that one hasn't been there is not true for the 80ies. Besides I have been there, down there in the tubes ... That is why I really appreciated the novel and recommend it to all buskers and non-buskers..
A wonderfully entertaining read. The author has been at the coalface and lived what he's writing about. So he obviously knows the people and the situations they get themselves into ... and out of and it shows in the writing. Recommend it for the humour and the sense of place.
This is an enjoyable read of John Dempsey that works as good summer reading, and if you've ever you wondered what life in the London 80's underground was like for artistes, the description in this book is worthy of any roller coaster ride of adventure and debauchery! Simple tales told for the sheer joy of story telling a great rollicking yarn!
